Why Not Sonex?

Why not the Sonex?

Cost:  The Sonex was the cheapest to build and the Lightning was second.

Speed of Assembly:  While the Sonex build documentation is almost second to none, the build cycle is like a tootsie roll...  Don’t you remember hearing that song?  “Chewy Chewy Tootsie Roll Lasts a Long Time”.  In all fairness, this is about like building any other metal aircraft.

Count on it being like a prison term, 3-5 years...

Looks:  Uhhhh, what can I say; “kind of ugly”, “homely”, “stubby”?   I do remember that growing up, I really liked the Porshe 911.  It was so ugly and fast, that it was cute.  However, I own a tractor that looks like a frog, a motor home that looks like a tissue box, I don’t need an ugly airplane!

Performance:  Even with the Sonex being kind of ugly, the performance was what drew me to it.  With it being the only one of the bunch that is aerobatic rated, I was really considering buying one.  Then I looked at the useful load, oops!

Materials:  Like I said in my Lightning review, I thought seriously about a metal aircraft because I had heard all the (quote unquote) horror stories about glass building and how messy it was.  Then I thought about how long it would take to build a metal airplane; and to do it right, I would need some specialized tools... NOT!

Room:  Even though the Sonex makes good use of available space, there is no getting around the small cockpit.  It easily has the smallest of the bunch; not good when you’re 6’-2” and 245 lbs! Once you are in, it is slightly snug.  Leg room is OK and knee room is slightly less than average.

Below is a letter sent to Kerry Fores of Sones who kindly questioned my build cost of the Sonex aircraft during my comparison.  If you are looking only at cost, the Sonex gives you the best bang for the buck by a wide margin.  You can build a fast and aerobatic aircraft for under $40k, really!  My comparison included......

well, read on in my letter to Mr. Fores.

Hello Mr. Fores

In response to your feedback, I just wanted to drop you a line regarding my recent article for the Arion Newsletter about how I chose the Lightning.  Let me say first that I really love most everything about the Sonex, and it remains on my short list of aircraft if I should ever choose to build an aluminum airplane.  Your company is very professional in everything that you do, and others like Arion will likely learn a few things from you regarding how to document the build.

Putting this aside, I felt that it is important to let you know how I came up with the $55,000 build number for the Sonex.

It was based on the following things.

  • Talking to several Sonex owners about the actual build cost versus the list price of the components, (I used a simple formula based on talking to about 15 people)
  • How I wanted to equip the aircraft, (I put a glass panel in mine, MGL Odyssey and some cool stuff along with a Garmin radio and transponder)
  • Comparable build “help” that I would need to hire to shorten the build cycle, I am using a build center with the Lightning.

All in all, for me personally, the comparison was fair and the Sonex still came out to be the least expensive to build/buy, but would take longer to get into the air.

You have a fine aircraft and company and no mis-information was intended.  I think the only thing I could have said differently was to clarify how I wanted to build the airplane, (options and assistance).

Kind Regards
Jim Langley
